One Night Stand

Get excited! One Night Stand is returning to The Studios on June 25th, with performances at 7 and 9 pm! Earlier in June The Studios of Key West sent a notice out to the community regarding the challenge of coming together to write, create, and rehearse for four ten minute plays in a 24 hour time period! The result is to be shown in front of a live audience in just two weeks. The event grants applicants the space to produce creative, out of the box work, with unique time framing, as well as a fun and different experience. Tickets are on sale now, so make sure to grab yours before the event is sold out! (Be quick, they’re selling fast)
Elena Devers, the deputy director, emphasizes how much fun all collaborators have while working on their plays. She explains that each person involved in production knows their specific positions, whether it be acting, writing, directing, etc., but nothing really begins until the night before. In a way, the pressure is on, and the hectic energy is at a peak! The night prior to the show, there are surprise elements that are revealed to the teams: a secret prop and line, which each playwright must incorporate into their scripts. Playwrights work overnight to create their play, which are delivered to The Studios’ office by dawn the following morning. On that morning, all people involved get together to spend the day rehearsing and getting to know their play, as well as creating sets, finding props, and crafting costumes. Devers says, “It is so fast paced once everyone begins scrambling to find costumes and props. People utilize their connections all over the island to get what’s needed for their play. Its so amazing how much effort they put in to make it happen.”
Having been absent since 2018, the return of One Night Stand is an exciting event that people across the island have been asking for, as there is always so much demand for the plays. Devers says that there are a lot of new faces involved this year, with about 35% of those involved being people that have previously participated. The show is fun, unique and different than many other plays that people are used to. Devers says, “The outcome even surprises the writers. They show up in the audience the next night and get to see what happens with their script, and how it came to life.” She continues to express her excitement about the upcoming show with, “I like the process of it. Seeing the wheels turn creatively, the dynamics between people as they rush to create something with the clock ticking, it really just brings out the best in people. I can’t wait to sit back and watch the magic happen.” We are so excited to see what this year has in store!
