Ogunquit, Maine Photographer Eric Taubert Trades his DSLR for a Cell Phone in Jag Gallery, Key West Exhibition

Jag Gallery in Key West, Florida has accepted two of Ogunquit, Maine fine art photographer Eric Taubert’s photos into their highly-anticipated juried Cell Phone Art Exhibit (opening October 30th and running through November 23rd).

“The requirements for our Cell Phone Art Exhibit were simple,” states Jag Gallery owner and artist, Letty Nowak. “Artists were invited to submit any of their digital photographs, paintings, or drawings that have been made solely on their phone with no cropping and no outside editing. The accepted images are being printed by Key West Fine Art and Photography on mounted aluminum at a size of approximately 6 x 4 inches. We had a great response to our call, making this exhibit more competitive than we expected.”

Taubert is an Ogunquit Art Colony photographer who has worked internationally, with an emphasis on coastal New England (with a strong focus on Ogunquit, Maine), Southwest Florida (particularly Sanibel/Captiva Island + the area between Fort Myers and Key West), and Europe.  His work has been exhibited in a variety of fine art galleries across the United States, featured in magazines, and is also held in many private collections.

The two images Taubert is showing in the Jag Gallery Cell Phone Art Exhibit are “five die in fire | ogunquit, maine” shot on a Samsung Galaxy S5 and “harry’s new york bar | paris, france” shot on a Samsung Galaxy S9+.

“I’ve always believed,” states Taubert, “that your camera gear isn’t what makes you a competent photographer. Don’t get me wrong, I love working with high-end camera gear. The majority of the work I show and sell in galleries are high resolution prints shot through DSLRs and professional grade glass. But my father managed a camera store back in the 1970s; and from the time I was born I was literally surrounded by almost every type of photographic technology you can imagine. Everything, from vintage Kodak Brownies, Rolleiflex cameras, early Polaroids, antique bellows cameras, magnesium flash bulbs, and a wide variety of toy and novelty cameras — all the way through to SLRs with prime, wide-angle, and telephoto lenses. So I’ve always been comfortable switching between widely different types of camera gear; and I learned early-on to focus on the composition and storytelling in my photos.”

“As we all know,” continues Taubert, “the best camera is the one you have with you. Since I always have a cellphone with me, plus a burning passion for photography, I’m constantly pushing the boundaries with this accessible digital medium in an attempt to capture evocative images. The idea of embracing limitations and exploring what types of innovation that process might inspire is something I’ve experimented with my whole life – and that’s exactly what spurred me to participate in Jag Gallery’s Cell Phone Art Exhibit. I’m very excited to be included in this exhibition – and I’m grateful to my friend, acclaimed Ogunquit and Key West artist Michael Palmer, for bringing this opportunity to my attention.”
