Officers Awarded for Professionalism

During an awards ceremony Friday at the Grand Key Resort, Key West Police Chief Sean Brandenburg honored several officers for going above and beyond the call of duty.

He awarded the Life Saving Award to Officers Chase Purcell and Cleyton Morris for an incident on August 24th when a man was discovered in a pool unresponsive and not breathing. They immediately begin two-person CPR and the man regained a pulse.

“If not for the quick response, lifesaving actions, and ability to perform under extreme pressure,” said Chief Brandenburg, “the subject would likely have succumbed to the drowning and died.”

Officer Purcell, along with Officer Randy Perez, was also awarded a Chief’s Commendation for his sharp eye and flexibility in an unusual incident.

The officers were responding to a motion alarm at a local residence. They immediately checked all the windows and doors to see what had triggered the alarm. The resident inside discovered via surveillance video that leaking water had loosened the house’s drywall and was flowing into the house. Officer Perez went outside to turn off the water main, then both officers went to work mopping up the water, moving furniture, and removing pockets of water in the ceiling.

“Their quick response and their willingness to go above and beyond to help clean up and secure the property represents the best of the Key West Police Department,” said Chief Brandenburg.
