During a recent awards ceremony at City Hall, Officer Erik Roberts was awarded the Key West Police Lifesaving Award, presented by Deputy Chief Randy Smith.

On December 26th Officer Roberts responded to a medical emergency at a Duval Street bar. He was advised that a subject was potentially overdosing, had labored breathing, and was unresponsive. Upon his arrival, Officer Roberts confirmed the man was, in fact, overdosing with labored breathing and a shallow pulse.

Officer Roberts immediately administered NARCAN to the subject, which provided little or no change in the patient’s medical status. Officer Roberts then administered a second dose of NARCAN, which improved the man’s medical status to where he regained consciousness and a normal breathing pattern. Rescue arrived on scene and took over medical interventions.

“Officer Roberts acted quickly and skillfully, recognizing an overdose and administering life saving techniques,” said Smith. “He has rightly earned the Lifesaving Award.”
