New Tricks!

By Fred C. Klein

We have a 10 year old female Schnoodle (mixed breed Schnauzer/Poodle) appropriately named Charcoal by my wife Joanne.

She is, by far, the best dog we have ever lived with. She is so smart that she communicates with her eyes, snorts, barks and tail. So smart that she can tell (dinner) time.

She is loving, loyal, brave, vigilant, sweet, curious, social, cuddly, persistent and, most of all, our treasured puppy.

One thing that Charcoal loves to do is sleep between us on our bed. However, the bed has always been too high for her and she required us to lift her on, which we gladly did night after night for 10 years.

Then, 2 weeks ago, Joanne and I were sitting at the end of the bed watching Mrs. Maisel with a space between us and Charcoal walked into the bedroom, looked up at us, sized up the situation, and suddenly, without provocation, shocked us by vaulting safely into the space between us.

To us it was a miracle. If I was an Olympic Judge her vault was a 10 for sure, as she stuck her landing comfortably between us!

I have tried to figure out how and why this miracle occurred. The best that I can devine is that she sought a safe haven between us and threw caution to the wind.

Since then she has repeated her bed vaults, but only between us on the end of the bed.

Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks???

Charcoal’s 10 should be an inspiration to all of us!
