National Suicide Prevention Week
Mayor Teri Johnston and the entire City Commission have proclaimed the week of September 6th through the 12th as National Suicide Prevention Week.
The proclamation is in recognition that suicide is a national and statewide public health problem, and its prevention is therefore a national and statewide responsibility. Suicide is the only leading cause of death in the United States that has increased every year for the past decade.
For several years, Commissioner Mary Lou Hoover has advocated suicide awareness and organized walks to raise that awareness.
Organizations such as the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention envision a world without suicide, and are dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide through research, education, advocacy and resources for those who have lost someone or who personally struggle.
