Mushroom Growing Operation Arrest
On March 15th the Key West Police Department Special Investigations Unit and Special Response Team, with the assistance of Homeland Security Investigations, Drug Enforcement Administration, U.S. Border Patrol, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, executed a search warrant at 1524 Washington Street.
Detectives and Special Agents found evidence of a large psilocybin mushroom grow operation. Psilocybin is a powerful hallucinogenic drug and a Schedule I controlled substance. In total, 9,459 grams — almost 21 pounds — of psilocybin mushrooms were recovered from the residence, as well as several digital scales commonly used in the packaging and sale of illegal narcotics.
Detectives and Special Agents also recovered hundreds of rounds of ammunition, as well as several electronic control weapons. Florida law prohibits convicted felons from possessing firearms, ammunition, or electronic weapons.
Thomas Joseph Sireci III, 45, of Key West, was arrested for cultivation of a Schedule I controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of ammunition by a convicted felon, and possession of electronic weapons by a convicted felon.
