Motorist cited after nearly causing a head-on collision

A 73-year-old Miramar, Florida man was given a mandatory notice to appear in court citation Wednesday after causing a crash with injuries on U.S. 1 that nearly included a head-on crash with a tractor-trailer.

Derrick Lloyd Simpson was cited for reckless driving that caused property damage/personal injuries.

Simpson was driving a Toyota pickup truck with two passengers at approximately 5:52 a.m. near Mile Marker 55.5 when he attempted to pass a dump truck. Simpson drove into the lane of an oncoming tractor-trailer. Simpson narrowly avoided striking the tractor-trailer but did hit the dump truck during his attempt, causing the pickup truck he was driving to crash into the mangroves. The crash also damaged the dump truck.

Simpson and the two pickup truck passengers were taken to Fishermen’s Hospital in Marathon with non-life-threatening injuries.
