Monroe County State Attorney’s Office Targets Illegal Fishing to Preserve Natural Resources

In its ongoing efforts to protect the area’s delicate marine ecosystems, the Monroe County State Attorney’s Office, under the direction of State Attorney Dennis Ward, has been actively prosecuting cases of illegal fishing. These actions are part of a broader initiative to enforce fishing laws and regulations, crucial for conserving the county’s fragile and finite natural resources.

Recent prosecutions include the case against Miami resident Fernando Gomez, who was found guilty of several illegal fishing activities. His offenses include capturing snook out of season, possessing undersized snook, and utilizing illegal fishing equipment. The court’s decision resulted in a 10-day jail sentence, six months of probation, a requirement to attend a conservation course offered by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), and a ban on fishing or diving in Monroe County waters during probation. Gomez was also ordered to pay $383 in court costs and fees, emphasizing the legal consequences of endangering marine ecosystems.

Another case involved Yandys Moya, convicted for the possession of undersized marine life, including snook and yellowtail snapper. Moya’s penalties include $838 in court costs and fees, a $500 fine, six months of probation for each offense to run consecutively, 25 hours of community service, and participation in an FWC educational program. These sentences highlight the importance of responsible fishing practices and the community’s role in marine preservation.

Overseen by Judge James Morgan, and prosecuted by State Attorney Dennis Ward, these cases represent just a fraction of the Monroe County State Attorney’s Office’s commitment to environmental natural resource’s conservation. The successful prosecution of Fernando Gomez and Yandys Moya is indicative of the ongoing dedication to upholding the law and protecting Florida’s marine biodiversity.

The Monroe County State Attorney’s Office, alongside its Law Enforcement Partners, continues to prioritize the protection of marine life, recognizing the importance of these natural resources for future generations. By prosecuting illegal fishing activities, the office aims to ensure the sustainability of the county’s marine ecosystems and promote ethical fishing practices within the community.
