MONROE COUNTY SOLID WASTE DEPARTMENT REMOVES FOUR TRAVEL TRAILERS ILLEGALLY DUMPED ON SUGAR LOAF KEY AFTER HURRICANE IRMA

SUGAR LOAF KEY, FL – Monroe County’s Solid Waste Department has nearly completed the removal of four travel trailers that were illegally dumped along U.S. 1 at MM 20 on Sugarloaf Key after Hurricane Irma.

Solid Waste employee Jimmy Hoy is using equipment to crush the trailers and transport them to the Monroe County Transfer Station. From there, the crushed debris will be hauled to the mainland for final disposal.

The metal frames are too big to be put in trucks and will be cut in the next couple of days before being hauled away. The area will be cleaned up when the work is completed this week.

Monroe County is gathering ownership information for the travel trailers and will attempt to collect the County’s removal expenses from the owners.

The Solid Waste Department has identified other illegally dumped travel trailers and boats in unincorporated Monroe County. The County will be following the same process to haul them away and to attempt to collect expenses from the owners who illegally dumped their property.
