MONROE COUNTY SCHOOLS OFFICIALS RESPOND TO BROWARD SCHOOL SHOOTING

MONROE COUNTY, Fla. – District officials would like to take the time to respond to the tragic school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in the Broward County School District. First and foremost, thoughts and condolences go out to the victims, to the survivors and their families, and to the administration and school personnel working around the clock to continue to prioritize student health and safety throughout the Broward County Schools.

While many details of this event are still unknown, reputable reports show that school and law enforcement personnel were well trained and responded appropriately to the threat. The suspect is reported to have shown many warning signs, including posting disturbing images, and sharing unsettling comments on social media.  This is why we continue to emphasize to students, staff and the community – “See something, say something.”

District officials want to reiterate their emphasis on the importance of student safety and security. The Monroe County Schools have a comprehensive plan, protocols, and procedures in place to provide a safe and secure learning environment for students. While we cannot share the specifics of these protocols, please know they include proactive tactics to provide for limited campus access, student behavior intervention and support, and emergency drills and training for staff and students. Because social media plays a role in so many school safety and security concerns, during this school year the district has launched an additional campaign to inform students of the appropriate ways to use social media.  This is an effort to remind them of the dangers and serious consequences that come from displaying inappropriate content and messaging it to others.

Building principals today, reminded students and staff of the emotional and social services available, and of the necessary safety procedures that are in place. Superintendent Mark Porter said this tragedy so close to home heightens the need to be aware. “We realize there is no true way to prepare for all forms of intrusion at a school, but we will continue to be vigilant and proactive in this regard. The horrific casualties in Broward County show once again how delicate the balance is between home and school interactions for a student. We must continue to be aware, compassionate, and alert to any warning signs or situations where someone may be in need or be troubled. Our next steps as a district is to continue to emphasize the shared responsibility in ensuring student health and safety, while continuing to provide all available resources to students and their families.”

Furthermore, a recent media report of threats and guns at Horace O’Bryant School are inaccurate, incomplete, misleading and unfortunate.  School leadership has worked closely with law enforcement personnel to address all reported or perceived threats which are processed via proven threat assessment protocols and procedures.  At no time has there been any credible threat or action taken to cause harm to students on our school campuses, including Horace O’Bryant School.  This will continue to be the proactive practice of the Monroe County Schools as we make the safety of all students and staff our highest priority.
