MONROE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD MEETING HIGHLIGHTS FOR JUNE 27

The Monroe County School District met June 27th, 2017 at the A.J. Henriquez Administration Building in Key West, for a scheduled School Board workshop and meeting. There was a closed session from 3:01 pm until about 5 pm. The meeting convened with all five board members present.

Here are highlights from the workshop and meeting:

  • Superintendent Mark T. Porter presented the board with details related to an addendum of the Stock Island property purchase agreement, which required a super-majority vote.
  • Superintendent Porter also gave the board an update on the 2017 summer school program, taking an overall look at enrollment across the district.
  • The board discussed the City of Marathon’s request for the Marathon Manor property, which specifically addressed the request for a community pool and use of the property for affordable housing. Mr. Porter mentioned the potential for a partnership in the use of the land exclusively.
  • Mr. Porter addressed the transition to Key West City Hall on January 1, 2018.
  • The district’s Finance Team was recognized for their Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting for a third year in a row from VALIC, a division of American International Group, Inc. (AIG)
  • The Superintendent introduced the district’s new board-approved Science Coordinator, Melissa Alsobrooks.
  • The School Board Members also approved the following items:
    • Approval with a 5-0 vote of Policy 2431.04 for student drug testing, with comments from Chairman John Dick, Vice Chairman Bobby Highsmith, Board Members Mindy Conn, Andy Griffiths, and Ron Martin.
    • Approval of the removal and disposal of tangible personal property from asset records, with comment from Purchasing Supervisor Suanne Lee.
    • Approval of the addendum to the commercial purchase contract for the 1.75 acres parcel on Stock Island with a 5-0 vote.
    • Approval of the hourly non-bargaining unit employee compensation adjustment.
    • Approval of the May Sands Montessori School 15-year lease.
