MONROE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD MEETING HIGHLIGHTS FOR AUGUST 22nd 

The Monroe County School District met August 22nd, 2017 in the Media Center at Marathon High School, for a scheduled School Board workshop, meeting and a tentative Budget hearing for fiscal year 2017-2018.

Here are highlights from the workshop and meeting:

  • Head Start Director Marla Russell presented an update on the district’s Head Start program.
  • Executive Director of Operations and Planning Patrick Lefere workshopped the three potential design schemes for the Marathon Athletic Field Complex with the board. There was a consensus of the School Board to go with scheme ‘C’.
  • Mr. Lefere also discussed some Construction updates, which included updates of Gerald Adams Elementary, Plantation Key School (expected to be completed in a year, according to construction officials), and Stanley Switlik Elementary.
  • Superintendent Mark Porter followed up the discussion with an overview of the logistics for the first day of school, which included the management of GAE and PKS construction and students, and the new single start/dismissal times and Bus Loop at Horace O’Bryant School.
  • Superintendent Porter also discussed the Inaugural Academic Day hosted by Title I and Student Services for Lower Keys Schools, scheduled for Saturday, August 26th, from 9 am to noon.
  • Executive Director of Finance and Performance presented the Tentative Budget for fiscal year 2017-2018 for a third time to the board and the public.
  • The board listened to input from the public about the possibility of a collaboration between the City of Marathon and the Monroe County School Board to build a pool, with the consideration of the district building a larger Sports Athletic Complex, specifically with scheme ‘C’.
  • Student athletes at Marathon High School also spoke to which option would be best fitting for the area.

The School Board Members also approved the following items during regular meeting:

  • A Health Insurance Committee recommendation for a 5% premium increase effective October 1 and plan design changes effective January 1, 2018, 5-0
  • The purchase of College Board PSAT and SAT School Day, 5-0
  • An Attendance Proclamation declaring September “Attendance Awareness Month” within the District, 5-0
  • Four Mutual Release Agreements, 5-0
