Monroe County Presents at MLKAR “Get to Know Monroe Educational Series

MARATHON, FL – Monroe County’s Assistant County Administrators Christine Hurley and Kevin Wilson joined Building Official Rick Griffin and Permitting Administrator Crystal Sebben at Thursday’s Marathon and Lower Keys Association of Realtors “Get to Know Monroe” educational series. The group discussed Rate of Growth Ordinance (ROGO), permitting, code enforcement, downstairs enclosures, FEMA regulations, County parks, and the sewer system, including hookups.

Hurley explained the proposed ROGO extension through 2026 to allow time for the State to conduct an updated state-produced hurricane evacuation model after the 2020 census. “This gives us a longer time to evaluate the buildout situation and things like vacancy rates to see if the state will issue any more ROGO units to the County and cities,” she said.

Since code enforcement and permitting are still in high demand following Hurricane Irma, Sebben explained the permitting process and reminded those in attendance the usefulness of Monroe County’s eSearch site. The portal allows the public to review status and information on permits, search local licensed contractors, see code compliance cases, and review property information for unincorporated Monroe County. The portal can be found at www.monroecounty-fl.gov/mcesearch.

In addition, Griffin explained the flood regulations related to downstairs enclosure and permitting related to houses below base flood elevation. Wilson explained the County’s policy regarding a new development’s responsibility to cover the full cost of extending sewer service to it.

Representatives from the City of Marathon and City of Key Colony Beach were also in attendance.
