Monroe County Officials Meet With U.S. Rep. Curbelo in Washington to Discuss Reauthorization of National Flood Insurance Program

WASHINGTON – Monroe County Commissioner Heather Carruthers and Monroe County Legislative Affairs Director Lisa Tennyson met with U.S. Rep. Carlos Curbelo in his Washington office Monday to discuss maintaining affordable flood insurance for property owners in Florida.

They were accompanied by Monroe County’s federal lobbyist, Greg Burns with Van Scoyoc Associates, and Martin County Commissioner Doug Smith. Carruthers and Smith are both members of the Florida Association of Counties.

The group asked for Curbelo’s help in supporting the reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program, which expires in September 2017.  The group also met with other Florida congress members and the staff of key House and Senate committee members to raise the County’s concerns and share the County’s recommendations of maintaining the NFIP’s affordability, accessibility and stability.
