MONROE COUNTY LONG TERM RECOVERY GROUP TO HOST VOLUNTEER VILLAGE RIBBON CUTTING ON MARCH 5

BIG PINE KEY, FL – The Monroe County Long Term Recovery Group will host a ribbon cutting for its Volunteer Village on Tuesday, March 5 at 10:30 a.m. at 30300 Overseas Highway on Big Pine Key, behind the Salvation Army Building.

The Volunteer Village is set up on County-owned land and will temporarily house volunteers working on the recovery effort in Monroe County. The recovery group purchased two containers that are built to house 10 volunteers each. The containers are 40-foot by 12 ½-foot and are set up on chassis that can be easily moved during hurricane evacuations or relocated to another site where recovery help is needed in the Keys.

“The Volunteer Village is a great example of a collective action initiative supported by local, state and national disaster recovery organizations and foundations working in the Florida Keys,” said Michelle Luckett, Executive Director of the Monroe County Long Term Recovery Group. “This is the first time this type of project has been undertaken where the housing units are mobile with the ability to be highly responsive to the needs of the community and County emergency management.”

Partners for the Volunteer Village include Monroe County BOCC, Center for Disaster Philanthropy, American Red Cross, Salvation Army, Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Network, The Miami Foundation, Ocean Reef Community Foundation, United Way of the Florida Keys, St. Vincent De Paul of the Diocese of Greater Miami and the SOS Foundation.

To attend, please RSVP to Michelle Luckett at 470-232-8556 or [email protected].
