MONROE COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT PARTICIPATES IN FLORIDA HAZARDOUS WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK

MONROE COUNTY, FL – Florida Hazardous Weather Awareness Week takes place Jan. 14 through 18.  Each day, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will highlight a topic of interest in hazardous weather. Monroe County will highlight and share NOAA information about these hazards throughout the week on its emergency management website, www.monroecounty-em.com, and on its Facebook page, Monroe County BOCC.

Topics include: Lightning on Monday; Marine Hazards and Rip Currents on Tuesday; Thunderstorms and Tornadoes (including the annual State of Florida Tornado Drill) on Wednesday; Hurricanes and Flooding on Thursday; and Temperature Extremes and Wildfires on Friday.

The National Weather Service will issue a “Required Weekly Test” code in lieu of an actual live Tornado Warning for Emergency Alert System Activation on Wednesday. NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards receivers may either alert with tone and lights, or some models may simply flash lights without siren. This drill will take the place of the usual required weekly NOAA Weather Radio tests conducted in the Florida Keys on Wednesdays around noon.
