Monroe County Emergency Management Monitoring Cuba Situation

MONROE COUNTY, FL – With the death Friday of longtime Cuban leader Fidel Castro, Monroe County’s Emergency Management is monitoring the situation in Cuba, the island country located just 90 miles from Key West.

Monroe County Emergency Management Director Marty Senterfitt was on a conference call Saturday morning with Gov. Rick Scott, state emergency management officials and Coast Guard authority. Monroe County Administrator Roman Gastesi and other County officials have been updated.

At this time, there are no indications of mass migration and no expectations that it will occur, Senterfitt said.

“With due caution, we will continue to monitor the situation in Cuba to make sure we are prepared if anything unusual happens,” Senterfitt said.
