MONROE COUNTY CONTINUES TO MONITOR DORIAN, SEES LESS OF A THREAT WITH NORTHERNLY SHIFT

MONROE COUNTY, FL – Monroe County Emergency Management is continuing to monitor Hurricane Dorian.

As of the current 8 a.m. Saturday weather briefing by the National Weather Service Key West, Dorian is expected to have less of an impact on the Florida Keys than expected. There are still chances of sustained tropical storm force winds throughout the Florida Keys and squalls could be expected throughout the Florida Keys.

There is a possibility of coastal and street flooding, on both the bayside and oceanside of the Florida Keys. The flooding can be comparable to the highest king tide, or about 2 to 2.5 feet above mean tide levels on Monday and Tuesday.

“When there is a major hurricane off the Bahamas, there can still be a rise in water,” said Jon Rizzo, National Weather Service Key West.

The National Hurricane Center is expected to release detailed storm surge model later today and Emergency Management will advise residents on specific details.

“I’d love to say we dodged a bullet, but in the interest of complete diligence, we should wait until the favorable trend continues in the next few forecast updates to say that,” said Roman Gastesi, Monroe County Administrator.
