MONROE COUNTY COMMISSSIONERS AND STAFF PARTICIPATE IN FLORIDA ASSOCIATION OF COUNTIES LEGISLATIVE CONFERENCE IN SARASOTA

SARASOTA, FL – Monroe County Commissioners and senior staff attended the Florida Association of Counties’ 2017-2018 Legislative Conference this week at the Hyatt Regency in Sarasota.

Monroe County Administrator Roman Gastesi gave the Keynote speech that included a presentation about Monroe County’s response to Hurricane Irma – with lessons learned from the biggest storm to strike the Florida Keys since Hurricane Donna in 1960. Gastesi serves as President of the Florida Association of County Managers.

At a meeting of the FAC Federal Committee, which is chaired by Monroe County Commissioner Heather Carruthers, discussion included the committee’s top legislative priority: to preserve affordable flood insurance.

Monroe County Commissioner George Neugent serves as an officer on the Florida Gulf Consortium, which plans for the distribution and use of Florida’s share of the impact-based state pot of RESTORE Act funds due to the BP Oil Spill. The group discussed the future implementation responsibilities for environmental projects, which include $12 million for canal restoration in the Keys.
