MONROE COUNTY CLAIMS KEY LIME PIE AS ITS OFFICIAL COUNTY DESSERT OF THE FLORIDA KEYS

County Administrator Roman Gastesi shows his support by ordering Key Lime Pie during the meeting lunch break.

MONROE COUNTY, FL – While Plant City will have its strawberries, the Florida Keys will always be known for its Key Lime Pie, the bright and fluffy dessert that originated in the Florida Keys and has been around since the 1800s. Today, in light of the State of Florida making strawberry shortcake the official dessert of the State of Florida, the Board of County Commissioners declared Key Lime Pie as the County’s official dessert of the Florida Keys. In 2006, the State passed legislation selecting Key Lime Pie as the official pie of the State, but it will also remain the official dessert of the Florida Keys. While the commissioners said they have nothing against strawberry shortcake, they continue to support Key Lime Pie being known as the “official pie of the State of Florida. The City of Key West made a similar resolution earlier this month.
