MONROE COUNTY BUILDING INSPECTORS EVALUATING HURRICANE IRMA DAMAGE OF STRUCTURES AND PLACING COLORED PLACARDS TO INDICATE LEVEL OF DISTRUCTION
MONROE COUNTY, FL – As hurricane Irma survivors in Monroe County continue rebuilding their lives, property owners will face many challenges. The County is focused on public safety as it’s foremost mission.
Building inspectors are moving throughout the community for many reasons. Advanced teams are evaluating damage of structures and placing placards on structures that have:
Major Damage (orange placard)
Destroyed (red placard)
If you find one of these placards on your property, please contact: 1-305-453-8816. Employees can assist you in obtaining the inspection reports and pictures. This is important information you will need to work with your insurance companies or with FEMA during the process of recovery.
If your home is placarded with an orange placard that has MAJOR in large letter, you need to retain a licensed contractor to make improvements to assist you to remedy unsafe conditions or be qualified as an owner builder and bring your home back to a habitable state.
If your home is placarded with a red placard, the licensed Building Inspectors that inspected the home have indicated the structure is beyond repair and demolition is necessary.
County Inspection Teams are also inspecting structures in cooperation with the Electric Company. If your structure is posted with an orange sticker as follows, contact a licensed electrician to do electric work so your electric connections can be restored or be qualified as an owner builder eligible to make the repairs. Obtain permits from the building department so power can be restored, once safe.
