MONROE COUNTY BOCC HONORS BRIAN BRADLEY AS EMPLOYEE OF THE QUARTER

KEY WEST, FL – The Monroe County Board of County Commissioners honored Brian Bradley, Senior Coordinator in the County Attorney’s Office, as its Employee of the Quarter at the May monthly meeting in Key West.

Bradley went above and beyond his County Attorney’s Office job duties to help the County in its hurricane marine debris removal program. On his own time over a period of two months, including on weekends and holidays, Bradley was on a mission to find, research and document the 5 boats with the deepest draft that were docked anywhere in Monroe County.

This was important because FEMA originally would only reimburse the County for marine debris removal to a depth of 4 feet below the surface. FEMA’s main concern is for the removal of debris that is a navigational hazard.

County staff countered that the canals were public and open to all vessels, and therefore a deeper depth should be considered. FEMA allowed the County to submit detailed documentation for consideration on any 5 vessels located within Monroe County that had a draft deeper than 4 feet. ·

Bradley was always available at a moment’s notice to go to a marina and photograph a vessel when a call came in from a marina contact about the arrival of a large boat.  He continued to search to ensure he had located the top 5 deepest draft boats in the Keys.  He also used his expertise in graphics to produce a professional report that was sent to FEMA.

Bradley’s efforts provided documentation to FEMA to enable the County to request the marine debris removal contractor go to a depth of 14.7 feet below the canal surface waters to remove storm debris, instead of only 4 feet. (An additional 2 feet is allowed for low tide).

“Bradley went the extra mile to make sure that something important to the County, its residents and the environment was done to perfection,” said Rhonda Haag, Monroe County’s Director of Sustainability.
