Monroe County and FDOT Partner to Save Historic Railroad Mile Marker in Big Pine Key

BIG PINE KEY, FL – Last week, Monroe County Project Management, in partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), worked together to save a historic Henry Flagler railroad mile marker. The concrete marker located at mile marker 30 on Big Pine Key is more than 100 years old and was experiencing significant deterioration. There are only two other known surviving markers of this type, one in Key Largo and a restored one at Miami’s Gold Coast Railroad Museum.

Once restored by Monroe County, the marker will be placed at The Big Pine Key Swimming Hole and Nature Center at the Lower Keys Scenic Viewing Area, a trailhead of the Overseas Heritage Trail, for all to enjoy and view safely. Henry Flagler’s concrete mile marker system listed miles north of Key West and miles south of Jacksonville.
