Miami man arrested on drug charges

A Miami man was arrested Friday night after he was stopped for erratic and dangerous driving.

Deputy Mark Martin received a report t 8:10 p.m. of a dangerous driver from a Customs and Border Protection agent who was southbound near 109th Street in Marathon. He said he was behind the driver who was tailgating another vehicle and who was traveling 15 miles over the posted speed limit. The vehicle, a blue 2017 Hyundai, was stopped by Deputy Martin in a parking lot at 1700 Overseas Highway. The CBP Officer also stopped at the scene and Sgt. James Hager was on the scene as backup.

The driver was identified as 24 year old Meshack Rushun Walker. There was a female passenger and two small children in the back seat. When Deputy Martin approached the driver’s side window, he could smell the odor of burnt Marijuana coming from inside.

Walker told the deputy the vehicle was a rental. As Walker looked through rental documents from the glove compartment looking for registration and insurance paperwork, Deputy Martin could see a number of traffic citations mixed in with the paperwork. He asked to see them. They had all been issued within the last 20 days and were for speeding at 102 mph in a 65 mph zone in Broward County, speeding at 71 mph in a 40 mile per hour zone and having children unbuckled in the back seat in Miami-Dade County and passing in a no passing zone in Monroe County. Deputy Martin also recognized Walker from an arrest one month ago in Marathon for possession of marijuana.

A search of the vehicle turned up 7.2 grams of cocaine, 4.3 grams of crack cocaine and 17 capsules which tested positive as Ecstasy. A small amount of marijuana was also located.

Walker was arrested. He was charged with possession of cocaine and possession of a controlled substance. He was booked into jail. His female passenger and her two children were released at the scene.
