Men cited for wildlife violations

Two Fort Myers men were given mandatory notice to appear in court citations Thursday for hogfish and lobster violations at Long Key Bridge.

Marine Deputy Willie Guerra was on patrol on a Yamaha Waverunner, which are donated every year to the Sheriff’s Office by Riva Motorsports & Marine of the Keys in Key Largo, at approximately 3 p.m.

He saw a diver surface with a dive bag with 13 lobster inside, 10 of which were undersized. The diver, identified as Joe Collum Sanderson, 35, was cited for possession of over-the-limit lobster and undersized lobster.

Deputy Guerra spotted another diver about the same time. This diver, identified as David Charles Block, 27, had a spear gun. Spearfishing it prohibited with 100 years of any fishing bridge.

Block had a 15-inch hogfish in his possession. They are required to be 16 inches to be harvested.

Block was cited for spearfishing within 100 yards of a fishing bridge and possession of an undersized hogfish.
