Matecumbe Historical Trust will hold this month’s free presentation Monday, August 20th

 

The Matecumbe Historical Trust will hold this month’s free presentation on Monday, August 20th at Island Community Church starting at 6:30 pm.

Guest speaker will be Monroe County Historian Tom Hambright who will give a power point presentation on Keys History.  Tom is from central North Carolina and graduated from Appalachian University in Boone, North Carolina with a degree in education and history.  He served in the U.S. Navy for 21 years retiring in 1981 with rank of Lieutenant Commander.  He then worked for the Key West Art and Historical Society as curator of exhibits until December 1985 when he became Monroe County Historian at the Monroe County Public Library in Key West.

Some of the Keys people Tom will talk about are: Commodore David Porter and the founding of Key West and his fight with the pirates, Count Karl Von Cosel and the corpse of his true love that he lived with for seven years and Legendary Keys politician Bernie C. Papy who served as State Representative from Monroe County for 26 years.

In the tradition of the late, Paul Harvey, Tom will add a “Rest of the Story” to these historic events.
