Marathon Campus
Lolly, Lucy and… Batman?
By Tara McFarland
At twelve years old, bonded “sisters” Lolly and Lucy arrived at our Marathon Campus back in October when their owner sadly passed away. Lolly, a shy German Shepherd, and Lucy, an outgoing Boxer mix suddenly found themselves adjusting to an entirely new life at the shelter, without their beloved family. The pair had one another for security and comfort, and we knew we had to do whatever we could to keep them together.
Despite their age, both girls were relatively healthy with the typical signs of growing older. Their faces were gray, their joints a little stiff, and they were certainly slower now than in their youth. However, these gorgeous golden girls were so full of life and, despite their circumstances, happy, good dogs. Our biggest concern, of course, was finding someone interested in adopting not one, but two large-breed seniors.
Through the power of social media, we shared their story and photos with the world with the hope that someone out there would have room in their home and heart for TWO seniors in need of a second chance at furrever. To our surprise and delight, not long afterwards we received a call from John and Donna who were not only interested but committed to adopting Lolly and Lucy. They had recently relocated to a large home with plenty of land and had dreamt that their new home would include not one, but two senior dogs to love on for the rest of their days. The only problem? John and Donna relocated from the Keys to Alabama.
That’s how Lolly and Lucy met Batman himself.
John and Donna reached out to reputable organizations that assist with transport, committed to safely ensuring that Lolly and Lucy arrived in Alabama. Batman4Paws is a non-profit travel & transportation organization that helps adoptable animals across the state arrive comfortably at their new adopted homes or rescue groups. Batman traveled to the Keys and arrived in uniform at our Marathon Campus with his RV, swooped up the girls, and completed his mission. Lolly and Lucy are now furrever safe and loved in Alabama with their new family. Together, for the rest of their lives.
