Man in stolen Jeep out of Key West arrested

A 40-year-old man was arrested Saturday after he stole a Jeep in Key West.

Paul Acerno was charged with resisting arrest. More charges from the Key West Police Department are likely pending.

Where he lives was not immediately clear.

The incident began at 9:34 a.m. when Key West Police issued a be-on-the-lookout alert for a stolen orange Jeep. Key West Police advised the Jeep was left running unattended when the suspect, later identified as Acerno, drove away northbound in it on U.S. 1.

The Jeep was outfitted with a GPS that allowed the owner to relay its location to law enforcement.

Deputy Tom Fricke successfully spiked the Jeep near Mile Marker 23. The vehicle turned into the old shrimp farm property on Summerland Key where the Jeep was found unattended and still running.

A U.S. Border Patrol K9 unit arrived to assist. The suspect was found in the water nearby by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Acerno was taken to jail.
