Man charged with being a felon in possession of a weapon

A 61-year-old Fort Lauderdale man was charged with being a felon in possession of a weapon on Monday.

Thomas Scancarelli was arrested by Fish and Wildlife Conservation Officers on the evening of February 27th. During the arrest the officers accompanied him inside the Big Pine home on Coral Way where he’d been staying for several months. While inside, they saw what looked like two rifles and an AR-15-style weapon mounted on the wall.

When they got to the jail with Scancarelli, they notified Sheriff’s deputies of the weapons they saw. They said they believed Scancarelli to be a convicted felon who should not have had those weapons in the house where he was staying.

A check through law enforcement records showed the suspect to have been convicted of several felony crimes including trafficking in cocaine, manufacturing marijuana, multiple counts of possession of controlled substances without a prescription, multiple counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, brawling, fighting, and other crimes.

Deputies contacted the homeowner, who was in Fort Lauderdale. He confirmed the existence of firearms in the residence. He said Scancarelli did not have permission to stay in the home and was just supposed to be there painting it. He asked that Scancarelli be trespass warned from the home and that the locks be changed.

Scancarelli was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm due to his being in control of the firearms for the lengthy period of time he stayed there.
