Man arrested on gun/drug charges following traffic stop

A 46-year-old Houston, Texas man was arrested Saturday afternoon for possessing a handgun and ammo as well as marijuana.

Eric Toure Pratt was charged with possession of a weapon or ammo by a felon, possession of marijuana without a prescription, possession of pills without a prescription, providing law enforcement with a false name and driving with an expired license.

Sgt. Nick Whiteman was southbound on the Old Highway in Islamorada at 4:24 p.m. near Mile Marker 88 when he saw a BMW sport-utility-vehicle traveling faster than 50 mph in a 30 mph zone. Sgt. Whiteman stopped the SUV. The driver initially stated first name was “Marshall.” He later admitted to giving a false name as he didn’t have a valid driver’s license.

Sgt. Whiteman searched the SUV and found:

  • 1 Springfield Arms .45-caliber handgun with two magazines, including bullets
  • A total of 38 grams of marijuana in separate bags
  • Several generic Xanax pills and parts of pills

Pratt was taken to jail.

Pratt has previous legal convictions in Texas for robbery and cocaine possession.
