Man arrested in stolen car
A 20-year-old Homestead, Florida man was arrested Thursday after he was stopped in a stolen Honda.
Jose Carlos Blanquicett was charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle, possession of marijuana, possession of synthetic cannabinoids and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The Sheriff’s Office received information that a stolen Honda may be in the Florida Keys. Sgt. James Hager spotted the vehicle southbound at Mile Marker 103 at approximately 11:44 a.m. and confirmed the license plate number. Sgt. Hager was unable to stop the vehicle due to heavy traffic.
Deputy Victor Morales observed the vehicle pass him at a high rate of speed at Mile Marker 99. The Honda pulled into Bay Drive and stopped. Deputy Morales and a Florida Highway Patrol Trooper identified the driver, the sole occupant, as Blanquicett.
A small amount of marijuana, a vape pen, THC oil and rolling papers were found in the vehicle.
Blanquicett was taken to jail.
Heroin and large amount of money found in traffic stop
A 30-year-old Marathon man was arrested Thursday after heroin and more than $7,000 in suspected drug proceeds were found following a traffic stop.
John Casey Kornetti was charged with possession of heroin, possession of drug paraphernalia, smuggling contraband into a detention facility and multiple violations of probation.
Deputy Connor Curry stopped a Ford sedan on U.S. 1 at Mile Marker 31 at approximately 12:42 a.m. for failure to dim bright headlights. There were two men in the car and Deputy Curry identified the passenger, Kornetti, as a suspect known to him for having warrants for his arrest.
Deputy Brandon White observed a plastic container containing numerous small plastic baggies in clear view on the passenger floorboard. One of the baggies had a brown powdery substance that tested positive for heroin. In all, .06 grams of heroin, baggies, cut straws and a brown bag containing $7,004 were found on the passenger side floor board, underneath the passenger seat or in Kornetti’s backpack.
The driver was warned for failure to dim bright headlights. Kornetti was taken to jail whereupon another 1.2 grams of heroin was found in his possession.
Kornetti was booked into jail.
