Man arrested in fraud case

A 38-year-old Stone Mountain, Georgia man wanted by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office for defrauding a Key Largo motorsports business of a $24,200 vehicle has been arrested by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.

Joseph James Moss will face a charge of grand theft in Monroe County, but he is under investigation in multiple other jurisdictions for conducting similar scams.

According to the Sheriff’s Office investigation, Moss committed a type of credit card fraud in which the sale of the Yamaha side-by-side (UTV) initially appeared to be legitimate and was initially approved by Riva Motorsports in February 2024. The company didn’t realize the fraud had been committed until shortly after Moss had left with the vehicle.

The Sheriff’s Office investigation showed Moss has a history of this type of scam outside of Monroe County — specifically the fraudulent acquisition of expensive, recreational, all-terrain vehicles such as dirt bikes and UTVs.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office worked alongside the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, as well as the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, and the Cobb County, Georgia, and McDonough, Georgia police departments to arrest Moss.
