Man arrested in fight at marina

A 34-year-old Key Largo man was arrested Thursday night after knocking a man out who later required staples to his head.

Reynel Alvarez was charged with aggravated battery causing bodily harm.

Deputies Ignacio Molina, Cody Jackson and Tommy Durham responded to Key Largo Beach Boat Rentals, 104100 Overseas Highway, shortly after 10 p.m. regarding a fight in progress. Deputy Molina arrived first to find a woman who stated a man, later identified as Alvarez, knocked out another man during a fight. She took Deputy Molina to the 53-year-old victim who lying on the ground near the entrance to the marina, bleeding from the back of the head and in and out of consciousness.

Deputy Molina saw the suspect, Alvarez, standing near a tiki bar of the marina and ordered the suspect to walk toward him while Deputy Molina waited for Deputy Jackson to arrive. Both Deputies then detained Alvarez without incident and began treating the victim. Paramedics arrived, took over first-aid and took the victim to Mariners Hospital where the victim received 24 staples to the back of his head.

The female witness told Deputy Molina she saw two women walk toward Alvarez and tell him that the victim had grabbed one of them in the buttocks. The witness stated the victim began to walk toward Alvarez when Alvarez punched him in the face. The witness stated the victim was knocked out by the blow and fell on the ground, hitting his head. The witness stated the two females then went to the victim’s aid and began pushed Alvarez away from the victim.

Alvarez was taken to jail.
