Man arrested for throwing rock at teenager

A 42-year-old Islamorada man was arrested for throwing a rock at a teenager on Tuesday during an argument over fishing.

Dustin Hugh Strange was charged with aggravated child abuse.

Upper Keys Sgt. Nicholis Whiteman was dispatched to Robbie’s Marina in Islamorada for a battery. Once there, he contacted the 17-year-old victim and his two friends who are 18- and 15-years-old. The three had been fishing on public property near the marina. Strange, an off-duty employee at the marina, took exception to the three teenagers throwing baits and jigs toward the marina dock. A verbal altercation occurred. At some point, Strange left the dock area and walked over to where the teens were.

The 18-year-old turned on his cell phone video. Sgt. Whiteman viewed the video. Strange is seen about five to 10 yards away as he uses profanity. Strange is also seen mocking the teenagers fishing strategy, calling it “dirty fishing” while insinuating they were cheating at fishing. He then proceeds to call them sexually explicit names. One of the three teens returned the verbal volley with his own vulgarity. This appeared to infuriate Strange. More profane verbal exchanges occurred.

Next, Strange is seen on the video throwing rocks at the teenagers. They yell at him to stop, but he throws another. The victim states that one of the rocks struck him behind his knee. Sgt. Whiteman later reported finding a fresh cut on the back of the victim’s knee.

Sgt. Whiteman spoke with the victim and his mother. Both stated they wished to press charges.

Strange denied throwing rocks when confronted by Sgt. Whiteman on the phone.
