Man arrested for stealing dive/spearfishing equipment

A 41-year-old homeless man from West Virginia was arrested Monday night in Marathon for attempting to pawn stolen dive and spearfishing equipment.

John Christopher Phillips was charged with burglary, grand theft, dealing in stolen property and possession of stolen property.

Joe’s Marathon Pawn shop contacted the Sheriff’s Office Monday after they refused to buy a dive and spearfishing equipment from Phillips out of suspicion it was stolen.

Phillips left his ID card and all the stolen equipment at the pawn shop before leaving upset with the no sale.

The equipment had been stolen sometime Sunday night into early Monday morning from a vehicle at the Brass Monkey Bar and loaded into a Winn-Dixie shopping cart, which Phillips also stole.

A sticker on one of the spearguns was used to find the owner of the equipment later Monday, who once contacted had not yet realized his vehicle had been burglarized.

All of the equipment was returned to the owner.

Phillips was found near the Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant. He identified himself as Phillips, the same name on the ID card left at the pawn shop.

Phillips was taken to jail.
