Man arrested for stealing car 

A 36-year-old Miami man who was driving erratically on U.S. 1 was arrested early Monday when it was discovered the car was stolen.

Charles Perez was charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle and possession of marijuana.

Off-duty Sheriff’s Office Detention Deputy Lindsey Dunlap reported a reckless Honda Civic at approximately 12:43 a.m. on U.S. 1 in Islamorada. Detention Deputy Dunlap followed the suspect vehicle and reported it pulled into a parking spot at the Chesapeake Beach Resort.

Deputy Anfernee Rodriguez made contact with the driver, identified as Perez. Perez was unware of where he was. Perez stated he met a man in Miami and had been driving him around before they went to a mall. Perez stated he subsequently lost the man at the mall, so he decided to leave with the vehicle.

The Honda was reported stolen out of Miami-Dade County on Sunday.

A search of the vehicle yielded 2.4 grams of marijuana and a THC vape pen.

Perez was taken to jail.
