Man arrested for knife threats/fleeing into the water

A 27-year-old Marathon man was arrested Friday night after cutting a man’s hand with a beer bottle, threatening multiple people with a kitchen knife and then fleeing from law enforcement.

Yordany Rodriguez Marmol was charged with aggravated battery, battery causing bodily harm, battery on a law enforcement officer, two counts of resisting arrest and tampering with evidence.

There were no life-threatening injuries reported.

Middle Keys Deputy Corbin Hradecky was called to 1655 Overseas Highway in Marathon at 10 p.m. regarding a fight involving a knife. Upon arrival, two people told Deputy Hradecky that a man had “gone crazy and was fighting with people outside the apartment complex.” Deputy Hradecky approached the apartment complex and saw the suspect, identified as Rodriguez Marmol, with blood stains on his shirt. Rodriguez Marmol saw Deputy Hradecky and fled. Deputy Hradecky gave loud, verbal commands for Rodriguez Marmol to stop. Rodriguez Marmol ran up the stairs of the apartment complex and continued to flee on the upper deck of the complex. Deputy Hradecky gave chase as Rodriguez Marmol leaped from the deck and into the water below. Rodriguez Marmol then began swimming under nearby docks. Deputy Hradecky kept a visual of Rodriguez Marmol as Deputy William Daniels arrived on scene as well as Sgt. John Jones.

Deputy Hradecky continued to order Rodriguez Marmol to come out of the water. Deputy Hradecky pepper sprayed Rodriguez Marmol, hitting him the face with the spray. Rodriguez Marmol then began swimming back toward the apartment complex while submerging himself in the water. Rodriguez Marmol emerged in shallow water near a cement walkway near the apartment complex. Deputy Hradecky shocked Rodriguez Marmol with his Taser. Deputy Hradecky grabbed Rodriguez Marmol, but Rodriguez Marmol began flailing his legs, striking Deputy Hradecky in the ankles. Deputy Hradecky then slipped on some algae and went into the water. Deputy Hradecky attempted to keep hold of Rodriguez Marmol, but Rodriguez Marmol was able to break free.

By this time, Key Colony Beach Police, Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Joel Slough, U.S. Border Patrol and multiple Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers arrived on scene and formed a perimeter around Rodriguez Marmol. Rodriguez Marmol was holding onto a piling and refusing to exit the water. The Coast Guard was also notified.

While the Coast Guard was en route, Deputy Hradecky found the kitchen knife that Rodriguez Marmol threw under a porch. Several witnesses identified it as the knife used in the incident.

Sgt. Jones and Border Patrol agents translated witnesses statements. Multiple witnesses stated the incident began as a group of people were celebrating a birthday at the apartment complex. A woman with whom Rodriguez Marmol has romantic ties walked over to the group and was given a beer. This upset Rodriguez Marmol. Rodriguez Marmol grabbed the women, shook the woman and slapped her. Rodriguez Marmol poured out the beer while splashing it all over the group. A man in the group confronted Rodriguez Marmol. A physical fight ensued between the man and Rodriguez Marmol. The fight was broken up, but Rodriguez Marmol ran inside an apartment unit and exited with a kitchen knife and a beer bottle. Rodriguez Marmol threw the beer bottle at the man’s hand, cutting it. Rodriguez Marmol then approached the man with the knife, but the man was pulled inside the apartment by others. The door was locked and 911 was called. Rodriguez Marmol ran around outside the apartment complex while screaming and wielding the knife in a rage. It was about that time Deputy Hradecky arrived and the subsequent chase began.

While Sgt. Jones was collecting those witness statements, Rodriguez Marmol surrendered to the Coast Guard and the FWC. Rodriguez Marmol was pulled from the water by FWC Capt. David Dipre. Rodriguez Marmol was detained.

Rodriguez Marmol stated, “take me to prison,” and refused to speak further to law enforcement.

Rodriguez Marmol was taken to jail.
