Man arrested for illegal gun/vehicle violations

A 20-year-old Key West man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after a traffic stop led to the discovery of a gun, marijuana and a litany of vehicle/license violations.

Jiovanni Semaj Brevil was charged with carrying a concealed weapon without a license, driving with a suspended driver’s license and possession of marijuana.

Brevil was also cited for expired registration, windows tinted too dark, no proof of insurance and failure to carry a driver’s license while driving.

Sgt. Joel Slough stopped a white Toyota sedan on U.S. 1 at 20th Street in Marathon at approximately 9:18 a.m. for expired tags and suspicion of illegal window tint. The driver, Brevil, stated his license was suspended and he was on his way to the courthouse. Sgt. Slough informed Brevil he already passed the courthouse. The car smelled of marijuana. A Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Officer arrived to assist as well as Deputy Jonathan Rodriguez.

A loaded .32-caliber David Industries P-32 pistol and a small amount of marijuana was found in the car.

It was learned Sgt. Orlando Alvarez issued Brevil a traffic citation the same day at 3:11 a.m. in Key Largo for driving with a suspended license. Sgt. Alvarez warned Brevil that he would be going to jail if he was caught again driving without a valid license.

Brevil was taken to jail.
