Man arrested for assault

A 35-year-old homeless man was arrested Thursday after throwing a table across the Boy Scout Sea Base lobby and threatening to kill a woman there.

Lawrence Luke Tweit was charged with assault, property damage and burglary.

There were no serious injuries reported.

Deputy Nerelys Vidal was the first to respond to a disturbance and knife-wielding suspect call at the Florida National High Adventure Sea Base operated by the Boy Scouts of America in Islamorada at approximately 11:40 a.m.

Deputy Vidal spotted the suspect, later identified as Tweit, under the building with a machete in hand. Deputy Vidal detained Tweit at gunpoint without incident.

Deputies Christopher Kilmurray and Nelson Sanchez also arrived.

Deputy Vidal met with the female victim who works at the base. The victim stated Tweit and a female came inside and both asked for a job. The victim gave both a job application form and then told both to leave as the base was currently closed due to COVID-19. The female left. Tweit stayed and demanded a glass of water. The victim told Tweit to leave as the lobby was not open to the public.

The victim stated Tweit then became enraged and threw a wooden table across the lobby, breaking the table and several other times all worth approximately $500. Tweit told the victim he was going to break a window and bash her head in with a rock. Tweit saw the victim calling 911, left the lobby and went downstairs where other employees reported seeing Tweit sharpening a knife of some kind.

Tweit was taken to jail.
