Man arrested after pursuit

A 23-year-old Lakeland, Florida man was arrested Wednesday after fleeing from Deputies on U.S. 1.

Jaaziel Hector Santana was charged with fleeing and eluding.

Deputy Juan Carlos Marino observed a northbound Volkswagen sedan at 1:06 a.m. near Mile Marker 59 with a tag obstruction. He turned on his lights and sirens and attempted to perform a traffic stop.

The car failed to stop and continued northbound with speeds varying between 35 and 45 mph. Deputy Marino observed the driver, later identified as Santana, hunching over, reaching toward the passenger side and moving around inside the vehicle.

The Volkswagen stopped on the Long Key Bridge. Deputy Scott Costa arrived to assist. Santana was taken into custody.

A strong odor of marijuana was emanating from the car. There was a large amount of “shake” in the interior as well as an empty mason jar. Deputy Marino noticed Santana’s tongue was green and small green, leafy substances in his mouth.

Santana denied eating marijuana prior to the stop. Deputy Marino called paramedics to have ensure Santana was medically cleared to be taken to jail.

Santana was later taken to jail.

Miami man cited for illegal snappers

A 62-year-old Miami man was given a mandatory notice to appear in court citation Tuesday for harvesting undersized and over-the-limit snappers from Long Key Bridge.

Marine Deputy Willie Guerra was patrolling when he inspected Keith Alan Knight’s catch and found 10 mangrove snappers with six being undersized and two undersized schoolmaster snappers. Knight was also over his aggregate snapper limit of 10 snappers.

He was cited for all three violations.
