Man arrested after incident at restaurant

A 51-year-old Boca Raton man was arrested Sunday night after yelling at Islamorada restaurant employees and causing a scene.

Albert Alexander Auer was charged with fraud and battery.

The incident occurred about 10: 15 p.m. at Pierre’s Restaurant & Lounge, 81600 Overseas Highway, after Auer threw a check at a manager’s face and left without paying the bill.

The general manager told Sgt. Patricia O’Keefe that Auer and his family were having dinner when paramedics were called to treat a family member who has a food allergy. The paramedics examined the family member in the parking lot with Auer present and then left given he appeared to be OK. Both then went back inside the restaurant to finish their meal. The restaurant agreed to take $105 off the price of the meal for the family’s troubles.

Auer, who had been drinking, became upset with the bill and went into the kitchen where he threw the checkbook at the manager’s face while screaming profanities. He also threatened to beat up the manager. He put a credit card down and dared the manager to pick it up, but the manager declined, fearing the matter would escalate further.

Multiple witnesses all gave similar accounts of what transpired. Auer was later found at a resort, arrested and taken to jail.
