Man arrested after fleeing from Deputies

A 61-year-old Key West man was arrested Thursday night after leaving the scene of a crash and fleeing from Deputies.

Carlos Alberto Dufflar was charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle, fleeing and eluding, resisting arrest and driving without a driver’s license.

The incident began at a parking lot on the 81000 block of the Overseas Highway at approximately 8:38 p.m. when multiple witnesses reported seeing a Ford F-150 pickup truck strike an outdoor ice machine, a parked sport-utility-vehicle and steel poles near the Mobil gas station pumps. One witness took a picture of the truck before it left the scene and provided Deputy Ed Swogger with a license plate number.

Sgt. Robert Dosh spotted the truck southbound near Mile Marker 75 on U.S 1 shortly thereafter. Sgt. Dosh attempted to make a traffic stop, but the truck sped away reaching speeds greater than 100 mph. Sgt. Dosh terminated the pursuit for safety reasons at that time.

Deputy Michael Onsgard set up tire spikes at Mile Marker 70 on Fiesta Key. Two truck tires were successfully deflated. The truck continued south before crashing near Mile Marker 69. There were no other vehicles involved in the crash.

The driver, later identified as Dufflar, jumped out and attempted to flee on foot. Dufflar did not follow Deputy commands to stop. Dufflar was shocked with a Taser. Dufflar was detained without further incident.

The truck turned out to be stolen out of Stock Island.

Dufflar was taken to jail.
