Man arrested after disturbance

A 20-year-old Key Largo man was arrested Friday for refusing arrest after an incident at Calusa Campground Resort & Marina. There were no serious injuries reported.

Abel Silva was charged with resisting arrest and battery on a law enforcement officer.

The Sheriff’s Office was called to Calusa Street at approximately 12 p.m. regarding a disturbance. A suspect, later identified as Silva, was yelling and acting aggressively while attempting to force the campground gate open. Deputies attempted to stop him from re-entering his vehicle fearing weapons may be inside or that Silva might leave the scene. Silva refused commands, pulled away, and pushed Deputies. He was taken to jail.

Woman arrested for fraud

A 60-year-old Cutler Bay, Florida woman was arrested Friday following an investigation into check fraud.

Vivian Mirabal Mendoza was charged with larceny, fraud, and counterfeiting.

The Sheriff’s Office was notified in April 2023 by a Key Largo resident who stated her $2,400 rent check for that month she had mailed was illegally cashed by someone other than her landlord.  The investigation showed Mendoza cashed the check once using a check depositing phone app and then a second time in person at a bank.

A warrant was issued for Mendoza’s arrest and she was booked into jail on Friday.
