Man arrested after chase up U.S. 1

A 42-year-old Fort Meyers man was arrested Friday afternoon after leading the Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement on a chase from the Middle Keys to Mile Marker 117 on U.S. 1 in Miami-Dade County.

Michael Campos Cordova was charged with fleeing and eluding and driving without a valid license.

The pickup truck Cordova was driving hit at least three spike strips laid down by deputies during the incident. Cordova was driving on three, tireless rims by the time he was forced to stop at Mile Marker 117 just over the Miami-Dade County line. Mainland local and federal law enforcement, including a Miami-Dade helicopter, were involved in tracking Cordova by that time.

There were no injuries reported.

The incident began shortly after 1 p.m. on the Long Key Bridge near Mile Marker 65 where he was reportedly driving erratically. He fled from deputies shortly thereafter. Deputies pursued and were  joined by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers. Florida Highway Patrol troopers also assisted.

The Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement closed roads and continued to pursue. By the time Cordova stopped, had he lost three tires. Other parts of the truck were also breaking off the truck and hitting the highway.

The pursuit remains under investigation.
