Man arrested after attempting to break into occupied residence

A 30-year-old man was arrested early Monday morning after attempting to break into an occupied Tavernier residence.

Alexander Nolan Rodriguez of Tavernier was charged with burglary, larceny and criminal mischief.

Multiple Deputies responded to a residence on the 92000 block of the Overseas Highway at approximately 12 a.m. after a couple reported someone was trying to break in.

The victims stated they were getting ready for bed when they heard a loud bang and saw the suspect banging a rock on one of their sliding glass doors. The female locked herself in a bathroom while the male called 911. The suspect left. The male victim noticed two fishing rods and a skateboard worth a total of $2,800 were missing. Deputies arrived shortly thereafter, set up a perimeter and secured the scene.

The male victim gave Deputies access to a nearby commercial building he owns. Rodriguez was found inside the commercial building. He was detained and led Deputies to where he placed the stolen items. The stolen items were returned to the victims.

Rodriguez was taken to jail.
