Made in Havana/Made in Key West: Summer Exhibition at The Studios of Key West

Opening Aug 3, 6-8pm

On view through Sep 23

Sometimes serene and still, sometimes turbulent and perilous, the waters between Havana and Key West bring to mind important passages, and inspire a fascination with what can be discovered on the other side. For decades, Key West artists like Winslow Homer, John James Audubon, Tennessee Williams, Mario Sanchez and Suzie DePoo — and more recently Mike Rooney, Peter Vey, Andy Thurber, Priscilla Coote, and others — have been called to make a connection to Cuba.

Thanks to a groundbreaking cultural exchange, One Race/The HumanRace, a lively dialogue between the artists and Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Cuba in Havana and Key West began three years ago. Since then, Key West has hosted the work of many of Cuba’s finest artists and a second exhibit of Tennessee Williams was hosted by MNBA.

This summer, many of Cuba’s preeminent artists are featured at The Studios of Key West. Currently included are three who are in the prestigious Venice Biennale. The work of Robert Fabelo, Abel Barroso and Mabel Poblet will be shown here in the Sanger Gallery, alongside the work of several Key West and Cuban artists who have been inspired by the relationship between the islands.

A special addition to the show is work by Carole A. Feuerman, a pioneering figure in the world of hyperrealist sculpture. Feuerman, who currently has a solo show at the Venice Biennale, says, “Swimming and water have fascinated me for as long as I can remember, and as a result, have become the essence of my inspiration for my pieces.

The public is invited to the opening reception on Thursday, Aug. 3 from 6-8 p.m. The exhibition continues through Sep 27. Gallery hours are TuesdaySaturday 10am-4pm, and by appointment. The Studios of Key West is located at 533 Eaton Street.
