Lucy Paige’s “Night Bloomers” at SALT Gallery

“Night Bloomers,” an exhibit of Lucy Paige’s newest works, will be on view through the month of February at Salt Gallery (830 Fleming St., www.saltislandprovisions.com). To celebrate, SALT will host an opening reception at the gallery from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, February 4. 

Lucy Paige arrived in Key West via sailboat over 30 years ago. Over a decade ago, Lucy began making art and, although she had no former training, learned the techniques she currently employs from local greats Jim Salem and Roberta Marks, as well as from a host of visiting artists offering workshops. Lucy is currently a studio artist with The Studios of Key West and shows with a variety of galleries and art centers in Key West and St. Augustine, Florida.

Lucy’s signature style combines a variety of media: acrylic paint, oil stick, ink, pencil and collage. Her mark making is colorful and playful, energetic, bold, direct and yet sensitive.  The works featured in “Night Bloomers” rely heavily on the intuitive evocation of flowers, leaves, vines and palms within a variety of patterns and colors framed by the velvety black of a tropical night.  

Lucy’s “Night Bloomers” series evokes the “sense” of wonder found on the island’s quieter areas in the evenings, when all manner of blooming botanicals dance and play across one’s senses.  “Night Bloomers” offers the viewer perhaps the chance to recall such an experience, or rather, the directive to seek such an experience. Each month, the island yields an array of fragrance, available only in the darkness of the night and she invites viewers to experience her interpretation of that fragrance this month at SALT. 

SALT Gallery features an eclectic collection of local art, local sea salts, jewelry, pottery, wine and Florida Keys honey. Gallery owners Maria Sharpe and Laura Holmes and Director Sarah Plaia Davidson feature a new artist each month at SALT. Lucy’s work will remain on display until February 28.
