Local Businesses Help Fund Workforce Housing

Key West, October 9, 2018 –Several local businesses have stepped up and contributed to funding and building the 10 unit affordable housing development named “Loewy Landing” on Big Coppitt Key.

Publix Super Markets Charities, Manley deBoer Lumber, D’Asign Source, Strunk Ace Hardware, Key West Hospitality Inns/Wicker Guest House, Hemingway Home and Historic Tours of America provided volunteer labor and funding for the construction of the project.  The Gardens Hotel will be contributing to one of the last homes to be constructed this month.

Employees of these businesses worked alongside the future Habitat homeowners as well as volunteers from across the country.  Debbie Batty, Habitat Board President, states “The local companies that supported this project have shown a strong commitment to the community in providing homes for local working families. We were honored to work alongside them”.

A common misconception is that Habitat gives homes to families.  Each of the partner families who will be moving in were required to complete a minimum of 350 hours of sweat equity and will be paying an affordable mortgage for their new home. Habitat structures the mortgages so that families pay less than 30% of their household income for housing costs.

From Mike Morawski, CEO of Hemingway Home, “Our company became a partner of Habitat for Humanity because the organization is action driven. What they do not only changes lives, it transforms the human spirit.”

Eric deBoer of Manley deBoer Lumber said “I can attest that the program works as advertised, and is a terrific way for any retail business in the Keys to make a meaningful contribution to a most difficult problem, that of creating a supply of worker housing”.

There are many ways for organizations to get involved with Habitat for Humanity.  For more information please call 305-294-9006.
