Local Artist Wins Prestigious Fellowship

The Florida Keys Council of the Arts proudly announces local artist Deborah Goldman as the 2016 winner of the South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship Award for Visual and Media Artists.

Ms. Goldman was awarded a prize of $15,000, joining several other artists from South Florida so honored in this year’s SFCC program.  The Consortium is an alliance of the Arts Councils of Broward, Palm Beach, Miami-Dade, Monroe and Martin Counties. The South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship Program offers the largest regional, government-sponsored artists’ grants in the United States, awarding $15,000 and $7,500 fellowships to resident visual and media artists. Since it was established in 1988, the Consortium has awarded over $2 million in fellowships to over 200 artists.

As a former botanical designer, Deborah Goldman has always been drawn to plant life, especially leaf forms. She finds symbolic meaning in botanic forms—an element that is embedded in the foundation of her creative work.  Deborah has lived in the lower keys for 25 years, and her artwork has been featured in exhibitions at many Key West venues as well as the Deering Estate, the Art & Culture Center/ Hollywood, Dina Mitriani Gallery, and the Museum of New Art Gallery in Detroit, Michigan.

The South Florida Cultural Consortium Visual and Media Artists Fellowship Program is a cooperative project funded in part with the support of the Boards of the five counties, and the National Endowment for the Arts, the Florida Department of State Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture.
